He is a certified practitioner and teacher of Traditional Asian and Western bodywork therapies for both animals and humans. He holds certifications from the Acupressure Institute, Berkeley, California; the Heartwood Institute, Garberville, California; Jin Shin Jyutsu Inc., Scottsdale, Arizona; Milne CranioSacral Institute, Big Sur, California; and the Sai Reiki Center, Pune, India. He is the creator of the Reiki Distance Healing Network. Tom is a founder and board member of the GRACE Animal Hospice Consortium, whose mission is to expand hospice care for companion animals and support for their caregivers. He is a member of the International Association of Animal Massage & Bodywork (IAAMB).

While studying massage at the Heartwood Institute, Tom’s instructor introduced the class to Jin Shin Jyutsu self-help. On three consecutive nights of applying self-help, Tom underwent profound physical and spiritual experiences, and was cured of chronic fatigue syndrome. He knew this gift needed to be shared. The ensuing journey into the physical and esoteric nature of energy work led him to studies in Jin Shin Jyutsu, Acupressure, CranioSacral, Qigong, Polarity, Tui Na (Chinese Massage), Zen Shiatsu, Chi Nei Tsang, Reiki, Thai Massage, and Somatic Emotional Experiencing.

The next step was to integrate his teaching and practice of holistic energy-healing modalities for humans with his lifelong love of nature and animals. For over a decade Tom has maintained a private practice for animals and has taught healing modalities for animals in Northern California, as well as several states in the Mid-West and North East.

The heart of Tom’s energy work and teaching is anchored in the ancient wisdom of Taoism with its emphasis on a holistic, ecological view of life in which our nature is part of the greater Nature. Working from the essence of the Tao, we can help animals and humans realign with their true natures and the higher aspirations of their beings. Taoism invites us to shift our limited perception of the body as a physical collection of muscles, organs, fluids, and bones to that of an entity that is alive, conscious, and self aware—a unity of mind, body, and spirit. As a living being, the body-as-consciousness contains a knowingness, an intelligence that animates and revitalizes all of the body’s systems. The role of the practitioner is to listen deeply through stillness, presence, and touch to what the body reveals about itself and its needs for restoring wholeness.

Tom’s founding of the Animal Acupressure Training Academy and his path of service to animals owes greatly to a 14-year journey with his dog Charley, who was both friend and incomparable teacher.
